Reporting an accident work can often seem like a challenge. Many people are afraid to report an injury because of the threat of getting fired or being seen as week. By learning when to report an injury at work, you can ensure that this process is correctly utilized.
Always make sure that an injury is serious before taking the time to report it. Reporting an injury that isn't serious can possibly endanger your position with a company. It takes valuable resources to process an accident report, so make sure it is serious enough to warrant the time it takes to complete. A serious injury is one that will prevent you from working or requires you to leave work for a trip to the hospital. An injury this serious may require that you file a workers compensation claim for time that you have to take off because of the injury.
Take the required drug test for an accident at work as soon as physically possible. A company must free itself from liability if the accident was caused due to being under the influence while on the job. Not taking a drug test immediately will discredit your claim and may make you look suspicious. While it may not warrant for your dismissal, it can definitely cause some problems with your claim.
Talk to a lawyer if you think the injury may be serious enough to file a workers compensation claim. Never attempt to file a claim under your own accord, because it may make it appear as if you are holding your employer responsible. This almost always results in a dismissal after the court proceedings are finished. Ask yourself if receiving financial compensation for your injury is worth the possibility of loosing your job.
By learning how to report an accident at work, you can assure that you are covering yourself no matter what direction the injury takes you. Always use common sense with injuries on the job and report them immediately if they are serious. Reporting accidents is something that every employee may have to do once in their lifetime.
